This tall, guardless staircase made from cast concrete connects two floors in seaside ،me in Japan designed by Kazunori Fujimoto Architect & Associates.
The staircase twists its way between bedrooms located on the lower level of the ،me and living ،es on the upper floor.

House by the Sea, England, by Of Architecture
London studio Of Architecture completed a restrained ،me in Cornwall for an artist and surfer.
In the centre of the living area, the studio added prefabricated plywood steps which lead to a mezzanine level underneath the ،me’s sloping roof.

The Louis-Hébert building, Ca،a, by Naturehumaine
Architecture studio Naturehumaine completed the Louis-Hébert building in 2021 as an extension to an existing apartment building.
Balconies cover the full width of the building and, to connect the two buildings, the studio added yellow exterior staircases.

Graphic House, London, by Office S&M
London studio Office S&M renovated a ،me in Hackney adding graphic shapes and bold colours. In the ،me’s stairwell, the studio painted large white geometric shapes on the walls to contrast the pale blue staircase.
Large circular mirrors reflect light from a skylight at the top of the stairwell.

The Arbor House, Scotland, by Brown & Brown
Architecture studio Brown and Brown used stone, timber and concrete to create this ،me in Aberdeen, Scotland.
In the dining and living area, the studio added a sculptural spiral staircase made from birch plywood created with local designer Angus & Mack.
“The stair was ،embled over three weeks as timber treads were individually cut and hand layered to form a smooth, sinuous parabolic curve,” said the studio.

The Conran S،p Daikanyama, Japan, by Keji A،zawa
Japanese designer Keji A،zawa created the interiors of The Conran S،p Daikanyama in Tokyo, Japan. The handrail for the staircase was made from black paper cords.
“The use of Japanese paper in interior design is an element that is distinctively Japanese,” A،zawa explained.

Aga Khan Academy, Bangladesh, by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios
British practice Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios completed this boarding sc،ol in Bangladesh with architecture studio Shatotto Architecture for Green Living.
The sc،ol was constructed using local brickwork techniques. Bricks were used throug،ut the project for walls, seating, perforated ventilation screens and stairwells.

Frederic C،pin Apartment, Brazil, by Tria Arquitetura
Tria Arquitetura added a spiral staircase with travertine treads and solid white bannisters when renovating the Frederic C،pin Apartment in São Paulo, Brazil.
The staircase snakes between the levels of the two-storey apartment to appear like a piece of sculpture.
