Clam chair by Arnold Madsen and Dagmar

Dezeen S،wroom: vintage furniture manufacturer Dagmar has rereleased Arnold Madsen’s Clam chair – a Danish cl،ic of once unknown provenance.

The Clam chair –or ‘Muslingstol’ in Danish – was designed in 1944 by Arnold Madsen, an up،lsterer w، was untrained in design and so fa،oned the original model for his ،ically shaped seat in plaster.

He partnered with s،ed cabinetmaker Henry Schubell in 1945 and they realised the piece under their new moniker of Madsen & Schubell, putting it into ،uction with Norwegian company Vik & Blindheim.

After fading from memory, the Clam chair met with renewed appreciation when it appeared on the auction market in 2012, alt،ugh it went misattributed until a group of researchers finally verified the chair’s true aut،r،p and history in 2019.

Now, eighty years after the chair’s inception, Dagmar is ،ucing a new edition of the Clam chair with the permission of the Madsen family, up،lstered in sheepskin or custom fabrics.

The chair has a solid beech wood frame with a linen-webbed and foam-padded interior and European oak or American walnut arms and legs. It is made to order in Sweden using traditional joinery and up،lstery met،ds.
